KED: Are there any tips and tricks for collection we can share?

Blood Collection:

Before Collection:

• Drink a glass of water 30 minutes before collection
• Complete the label on the patient information card and place sticker on the sample pouch
• Wash hands with soap in very warm water
• Rub hands together for 15 seconds to stimulate blood flow
• When taking a blood sample, place the lancet red top face up on a firm surface

During Collection: 

• Firmly push and hold finger against red top of lancet
• Bleed into the collection well of the cassette until the arrow indicator is red 

After Collection:

• Keep your Wallet Card
• Mail the sample on the same day it is collected before the last mail pick-up of the day

Urine Collection:

Before Collection

• Do not remove yellow caps on tubes
• Do not peel back yellow label on collection cup
• Collect the sample during the first urination of the day (after waking up)

• Complete the label on the patient information card and place sticker on the biohazard bag

During Collection

• Collect urine mid-stream until the cup is almost full
• Transfer urine from the cup to the tube by pressing the tube down firmly into the collection needle. Remove tube when urine stops flowing.
• Only one sample tube needs to be collected

After Collection

• Keep your Wallet Card
• Mail the sample on the same day it is collected before the last mail pick-up of the day
