Are there any tips or tricks for collection we can share with participants?
Each sexual health test has a specific collection method: finger prick of blood, urine collection and/or vaginal swab. Referencing this article on collection types per test, you can use the tips below to share with your participants for collection tips and tricks.
Finger Prick - Blood
Before Collection |
- Drink a large glass of water
- Warm hands with hot water for at least 1 minute
- Shake your hands by your side for 15-20 seconds
- Clearly and completely fill out the collection card

During Collection |
- Do not tap or touch the card
- Drop large, free-falling drops on the card
- Make sure your blood soaks through the back of the card

Urine Sample
Before Collection |
- Wait 24 hours after intercourse.
- Do not pour preservative out of tube.

During Collection |
- Push open urine collection cup (it will expand) to collect urine.
- Transfer urine from the cup to the tube using the pipette.
- Tightly seal the tube and invert the tube to mix the preservative.

Other |
- Do not collect sample while currently taking antibiotics or within 7 days of taking antibiotics.
- Females only: Do not collect sample while menstruating.

Vaginal Swab
Before Collection |
- Wait 24 hours after intercourse.
- Do not pour preservative out of tube.
- Do not collect sample while menstruating.

During Collection |
- Label the sample tube with personal identifiers.
- After vaginal swab, leave swab inside of collection tube and tightly secure the cap.

Other |
- Do not use personal lubricants to assist with collection.
- Return the sample within 48 hours of collection.
